Stasis for all...

Thursday, January 28, 2010

I decided to try and find an editorial in the Pueblo Chieftain, and found out that it is quite hard. I do not read the paper, which is a shame, but I assumed that there would be an editorial in every newspaper. Then when I finally found the section, “Tell it to the Chieftain” there was only one entry. So I was wondering if Pueblo does not care, or if it is a reflection of the world turning to other news sources beside the newspaper. Regardless here is my analysis.

The issue was centered on a changed view of a city attorney names Tom Jagger. Mr. Gurule, the author, started out with a preconceived notion that Tom Jagger would fit his stereotype and not care about the general public. Mr. Gurule proceeded to say how much he enjoyed working with Mr. Jagger and what a wonderful man he was.

The issue that is being confronted in this article is Mr. Jagger’s reputation. If Mr. Gurule was having negative thoughts about Mr. Jagger, then most likely other people were having the same feelings.

There is not a conjecture in this article. Maybe if the article was written in 1994 when Mr. Gurule first encountered Mr. Jagger there may have been some hatred within the issue. This may be closer to an encomium rather than a conjecture.

I have never heard of Mr. Jagger before this, but a Stasis that could hopefully be reached would be: whatever the personality of Mr. Jagger is, he is a good city attorney for Pueblo.

I looked through the Chieftain too and found pretty much nothing, as you said. Even this does not seem like much more than a sorry excuse for an editorial. Why do you think this is? Is it because many of the locals, like yourself, do not take the time to read the newspaper, and therefore it is not on the top of the newspaper's priority list?

Also, could the conjecture be that his reputation has changed since 1994, seemingly for the better? Following this, what about the other three questions of staseis?

Are you not a local yourself? Maybe that should be your next project, Ruth, to write an editorial that actually combines all the knowledge you have learned about arguing.

And Hillary, I think that sometimes Puebloans, (is that what we are called?), do turn to other, bigger news sources other than our own newspaper. That possibly is why there is not very many editorials in the paper right now.

On a side note, though, I have seen days where the editorial section is about eight articles instead of just one. I think it just depends on what is happening at the time.

I have also noticed that the Chieftan is a very small town newspaper and thus does not address many local issues (however i could be mistaken).

I agree with Hillary though. there is no conjecture because what the heck is Mr Jagger's reputation?

Why was Gurule's opinion of Jagger changed, and in what capacity did they end up working together? Was it for a case here in Pueblo, or perhaps an event that the firm and the paper handled together? There are many questions that I feel remain unanswered...

I do not think that it is a bad thing that people are not reading the paper; the times have changed. I read the majority of the news on the internet or I watch the news at night. So yes, people like me are not reading the newspaper.

Honestly, I had never heard of Mr. Jagger before, so his reputation to me means nothing. And I agree with Josh that Pueblo, even though it has a decent sized population, is not focused around community.

After I asked my mom, she said that Mr. Jagger has recently retired afters years as the city attorney. So maybe this was more of an encomium.
