Exordium: While sitting in the Life Science building, trying to think of content for my blog, I could not help but be extremely distracted by the loud music blaring from the coffee cart. Since the library has been going under renovation, it is hard to find a nice place to study that is centrally located. The Life Science Building is perfect. It is stocked full of tables and benches and is in between the buildings on campus. When you are under a deadline and need to focus, nothing is worse than the 80’s pop songs that echo throughout the building.
Narrative: The Life Science building should be reserved as one of the few places to study. When I am trying to study, the music is so extremely distracting.
Partition: I understand that it may be hard to work the coffee cart and keep yourself entertained. Has anyone ever heard of ear buds? An MP3 player could solve this problem easier. In between hours, when the students are in class and there in little to no business, the worker listens to music. When a customer is there, all the worker has to do is take out the ear buds, and serve the customer. This eliminates the major distraction and entertains the worker.
Peroration: The library has been under renovation for over a year. Places to study are rare. After I have class in the Hasan building, I do not want to have to go all the way to the OUC when my next class is in the Technology building. The Life science building is spacious and actually has outlets. The music in the Life Science building is a huge distraction.

i totally agree with this issue on campus. I know Doug or whatever his name is likes his music. HOWEVER, he is the ONLY person who likes his music. it really is a horrible distraction
I agree, there really are no good places on campus that we can study in between classes. My schedule is similiar to yours, I have class in the Hassan School of Business, Math and Life Science building, I'm way too lazy to walk all the way to the OUC. And you're right about the Life Science builiding being spacious and having outlets, whereas the Hassan school of business barely has anywhere to sit and it is usually loud too, especially with the TV. It'll be nice when the Library is up and running again, but I'm pretty sure I'll be graduated before than!
Oh girl I completely agree! In my opinion, it would have been better for them to build the student center or whatever it is going to be on the other end of campus by the math building first. Then they could have worked on the library without limiting the space students need. I don't think the music would be a problem if it were turned down lower. I know how it is to work in a little space like that when it is slow. It is BORING! I understand that a little bit of music can help pass the time a little better, but the entire LS building does not need to hear it. I think a compromise can be made. He can still have his music if he turns it down to an appropriate level, and students can still have a quiet area to study in.
Hey Hillary,
Your blog was well written for three reasons. First of all, you have an awesome point; There is no place to study! I am consistently looking for a quite place that I can set my stuff down and just work(The OUC is the best place ive found). Second, you gave me your claim and then you proved it. For any topic, that is what you are supposed to do. Lastly, you were systematic in throughout your whole blog, good job!
I like this post because it is so true and easy to agree with. I personally walk over to the ouc more than Johnny Cash walked the line. I have heard the music to which you refer as well and it is quite annoying... I believe they call it noise pollution. Either way I think that the coffee cart is great... the guy, maybe who knows?... but the music is wretched 98% of the time. Although, I guess that is part of the trials and tribulations we all have to face during this renovation period on the campus.
I hate that our library is so dinky, considering we have million dollar rec center. Priorities? Hmmm... Great issue to discuss, because it's so true. All over campus there are places to socialize, buy food, and be entertained but there is a sadly limited area of study space for people who actually care about studying.
I couldn't get any studying done in that library, when it was around from Fall '07 'til whenever it closed. Too many distractions. I think I even wrote a comment in a paper I wrote somewhere that said they should give me college level credit for time spent in there. However, I haven't noticed as much in the OUC, so maybe it was distracting for reasons partially relevant to the fact that I had just moved to Colorado (everything new and distracting).
Oddly, I have no memories of being distracted by music in the life science building... not that I can recall at the moment. However, I never tried to study there either... if memory serves me right.
The quietest place I had found on campus to get some work done w/o distraction is the snack room on the main floor of the OUC (across from the bookstore), but I've only needed to use it for a few projects (prefering to leave campus to study), and assume if a good spot is found, it'd probably not be a good idea to let everyone know about it...perhaps leading to its no longer becoming a good place to study.
I do find it a pain in the ass attempting to locate an open computer lab; also not liking to have to go all the way over to the OUC, after attempting the Psych Bldg., then heading over to the HSB on a Friday only to find that the hours differ this day in comparison to Mondays and Wednesdays. I think I've encounter occasions where I was rushed to print something, and the hours had changed, as well.
Chapter Nine, page 318 #1... Okay, I see now. I didn't post a blog on that one; had trouble trying to figure out which question this was.
It looks like the audience so far is receptive, on the comments, perhaps a bit detached in discussion of related issues (me, if anyone, procrastinating homework but hopefully suggests some effort here in the response assignments, which I am currently spending too much time on, needing to get other things done).
I wonder if he listens to the music to drowned out the noise of the library construction, or to drowned out needing to listen to conversations going on between college students hyped up on coffee?
I don't like ear buds because they irritate my ears. Using headphones did the same, but I think I'm getting used to it (wearing them alot in apartment with thin walls to prevent bothering neighbors. Maybe same would happen with ear buds, but then again, maybe I've done destroyed the part of my ear that was being bothered by the headphones. I had a professor discuss in class how subwoffers in cars destroy a certain part of the eardrum, that never heals, but I haven't heard anything about studies involving ear buds or headphones.
Sorry for the lengthy comment, It's partially due to procrastinating writing papers and studying for final exams.
